MTS 2022-2029

Medium Term Strategy 2022-2029

The mission of the UIS is to provide statistical information on education, science, culture and communication so that:

  • countries‘ policies, research and decision-making are informed by sound statistical information;
  • countries can benchmark their progress towards national and international goals and learn from the experience of others.

There is an urgent need to strengthen linkages between data and statistics reporting and their use for policy development, particularly  in the context of the UN Decade of Action. With all SDG global indicators under UIS custodianship that already have a defined methodology, the Institute develops global public goods including methodologies, tools and guidance to provide pragmatic and sustainable solutions to support countries in applying international reporting standards.

Data and statistics coverage, relevance and timeliness must be expanded, in particular to address issues of equity.  The UIS creates innovative data solutions, maximizing the use of all data sources and to support the expansion of coverage for Africa and Small Island Developing States.

In order to respond to crises and newly emerging priorities, such as the COVID-19 crisis, policymakers need broader, real-time access to emerging data. The UIS acts as standard setter and coalition builder in the fields of indicator development and data production, building on its SDG experience to innovate and modernize.

Collaboration and monitoring of needs and resources is required to enable efficient and sustainable support to countries in their progress towards the Agenda 2030 goals. To the extent possible, technical partners, funders and organizations that influence policy development should be aligned on priorities.

Recognizing the need to fully unlock our data and analytics potential, the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) 2022-2029 will guide the UIS through a transformation that includes maximizing the availability of high-quality, harmonized data; supporting countries in building their capacity to collect data and produce indicators; and ensuring these data are relevant and accessible to policymakers. The UIS has defined three Strategic Objectives and the following Expected Outcomes for 2022-2029:
